This week four guests arrived to the Belousiha River Lodge. Three Russians and one Swiss. The days were mostly sunny, and the daytime temperature often reached 22 ° C. Just one day was cloudy, and cool, at + 12 ° C. The water level although still falling, has reduced the rate at which it does so with just a three centimetre reduction during the entire week. Winds were varied, although mostly from the south. Water temperature ranged between 16 and 19 ° C.
On the first day with 22 degrees to contend with, we headed to beats one and two, on the upper river. Igor was first into action on the pool “Swedish table” but sadly, the fish pulled free after a short battle. Better news was to be had from beat 2 where Roland landed a 59 cm salmon, hooked on a “Cascade” fly from the pool "Three Steps".
The second day was more productive – Roland, fishing with our English guide Robin, landed five fish, and lost a further two, including a very good fish at the top of “Inspector” pool. All seven fish were fooled by a “Cascade”. No less than four fish were caught from " Glinka I" fish of 57, 61, 53 and 62 cm, and 52 cm on one "Fedorovsky stream," which also was full of fish. A great start to our Swiss friend’s salmon career. Very tired, too happy, he never ceased to share his impressions of the day spent with Robin. Excellent understanding and trust, combined with sudden friendship bore fruit.
The third day brought six fish. Encouraged by the results of Roland, Igor, Alex and Dima went to the lower reaches of the river. Tireless, Igor settled down, landing four fish! Two on the "Glinka I", two below the "stone sack" - 52, 56, 55, 60 cm, and two more being lost. “Red Butt” the fly doing the damage. Alex caught one pacific salmon. Roland, in turn, caught two salmon: 52 and 53 cm on the "two stones" and "Swedish table" both on the fly “Silver Stoat”. And so began a friendly race between Russia and Switzerland.
On the fourth day, Igor went to beat 4. The place below the "stone sack" he had in mind. Many fish ere jumping, sending oscillations the length of the beat. “Red Butt” was again offered, and again scored, with three fish: Atlantic salmon, two of 57 and one 52 cm. Roland and Robin visited the powerful Voronya on this day, where Roland through persistent and accurate work with the 15’ spey rod, managed to hook just one. Five head shakes later, the fish departed. In the international friendly, the account for Atlantic salmon is almost equal.
On the fifth day, the Russian fishermen decided to relax after a long, exhausting and hot walks. Roland, full of enthusiasm to win this week, went on. Just one chance, when his fly “Red Frances” was intercepted by a good fish in the pool “Big Stone”. However, that very same big stone was responsible for the departure of the fish, as the line became briefly trapped on it, and the fish made good his escape.
On the last day we had a chance to go fishing in the morning due to an early departure. Only Roland, on the "Aquarium" had any success. He landed two salmon both of 59 cm each, again on a “Cascade” with a further fish lost.
The fishing race came to an end. With a score of 10: 7 Switzerland were declared the winner! The week will be remembered for being loaded with laughter, jokes and friendly chat, which compensated for the failures of Alexei and Dmitry! Fishing - it's Fishing! Alex, catch you next year!
