This week the camp was visited by a guest from Italy, for just two days. The remainder of the week, rather than see the beats not fished, we utilized the time and the space for our guides, and some local friends of the camp, to enjoy the fishing.
First day of this week, was cold. But for the remaining days, the thermometer showed fifteen to nineteen degrees. Very pleasant for those out on the river. Northerly winds, and the water high, but visibly lowering with each day. Water temperature constant between ten and twelve degrees centigrade.
Roberto, is a very good angler, and fished the pools very efficiently. However, luck was not with him. He hooked just two fish on these two days, and sadly, both came adrift. One was a cracking early season fish in the five kilo range, which he played and had beaten, but on beaching the fish, slack line allowed the hook to drop, and somehow, the fish managed to flap back to ever so slightly deeper water and continue on its way. Roberto did not mind though. He had enjoyed the battle, and left the camp content for his time with us.
The next four days guides and locals enjoyed very bright and sunny conditions. Great fishing was not expected, but actually, a fresh run of fish gave great results. In these days twenty salmon were landed, with no less than six over the five kilo mark. Camp manager and head guide Sergei had a monumental battle with one of these, during which a number five Sage was smashed. Sergei has had many many salmon in his career, but this fish, in his own words, was the most aggressive he had encountered for its size. Such power the fresh run fish have.
Fish occupy most of the pools now, with more arriving every day, the tell tale sea lice showing this to be the case. The sea lays just fifteen kilometers from the camp, and in the lower pools on the Belousiha, you could almost call them sea pools, as the salmon share the water with the flounders.
Faster water is the most attractive to these fresh run fish, who are happy for the oxygenated water as they prepare to make the next stage of the river. Best flies this week, Undertaker and Cascade.
